2008-05 Galway, Ireland

Galway was a lot of fun, but the job didn’t start well. Our field server at this time was a DEC AlphaServer ES40 known as “Gandalf”. But after a job in WA, Gandalf disappeared somewhere between Perth and Adelaide, so we were unable to freight him to Ireland for the Galway survey.

We had to make do with our backup server, an underpowered AlphaServer DS15, until the decision was made to freight our other ES40, “Frodo”, from Adelaide. This left the Adelaide office without its main server, but it was deemed easier to source a suitable replacement server in Adelaide than in Galway.

Gandalf was eventually found about 3 months later at the back of a warehouse in the middle of nowhere.
